Great hiking with lots of trail options for long or short hikes. Auxier Ridge trail has amazing views. Will have to come back for some paddling in the summer.
Note: If you love stars and don't mind stairs, try out a treehouse for lodging.
This place gives me nostalgia.... Absolutely LOVE this place. I went here when I was a kid with my family and the memories always come full force when I enter the Gorge. Another one of God's beautiful creations.
The Red River Gorge is a part of the Daniel Boone National Forest. It defines a specific area of the forest. There are hundreds of maintained forest trails and parts of the trails crossover into the State Park system of Natural Bridge. When we first started exploring "the Gorge" I felt like that took some time for me to understand as a beginning hiker. There are beautiful rock formations, steep hills, huge drop-offs, wildlife, and all of nature at its finest. The Red River Gorge does allow for "back country" camping and backpacking camping. There are specific camping rules that are designed for your safety and to conserve the precious nature of the forest. Basic safety precautions should be taken especially with small children and pets as a large drop-off can pop-up out of nowhere and you can be at the bottom of it without even realizing what happened. Additionally, there are some jerks that try to take advantage of your parked car while you hike. People have been known to have their windshield busted out while hiking - this is the reason for my 4 star rating. Do not leave anything of value inside your car. Take plenty of water and food in the event you become lost because it has happened! Take a map. They sell fantastic maps at the local stores nearby the most popular trail-heads. We absolutely love this place! It is one of the most beautiful places in Kentucky. We have been exploring this area for over 5 years and I feel like we have only seen a fraction of what it offers. There are hundreds of photos online to show what each trail offers. Do your research and open your eyes! I can walk the same trail 10 different times and see something new each time. The magic of this forest and the history is beyond anything you can imagine. The abundant types of trees and plants will make you feel like you've stepped outside of Kentucky.
This place is great for a good hike with friends and family. While it is not as impressive as some landforms in the west, Red River Gorge is arguably the most beautiful location in Kentucky. It's simple and relatively safe if you're careful about your surroundings, just get a map, pack some food and water then set trail. Not only can you hike, there is GREAT climbing opportunities with different levels that suit everybody's experience level, whether it is your first time climbing or your 30th year. The only main safety concern is the cliffs. While most if not all of the cliffs are fenced, they are barely visible at night and it is very easy to walk off one. Other than that, if you're aware of your surroundings and don't act stupid around the cliffs, you'll be promised an awesome time.
Grew up nearby and after moving to DC several years ago, I was happy to return to the forest for my wedding. The skybridge rock overlook was a beautiful backdrop for the ceremony, and all the outdoor activities at the Gorge kept guests happy for the weekend. I wouldn't have changed a thing. Thanks to all the small businesses in the Gorge for making this a wonderful experience!
